Not only would it abolish the need for dealers, but it would also eliminate the need for concealment due to the fact that it would no longer be against the law to purchase it. With the government having control over the selling of weed it would also control who purchases marijuana, similar to the purchasing of tobacco. Parents could worry less about their teenagers purchasing marijuana under age as well as preventing teenagers from getting involved with dealers. Like cigarettes one is unable to purchase them until one is eighteen years of age; however, many teenagers still find ways of getting them on their own. This is the same for marijuana. If a teenager wants to purchase marijuana then they will find ways to get. People would no longer be arrested for carrying marijuana on them; therefore, decreasing the amount of drug trafficking in Canada. By eliminating the crime caused by marijuana selling and smoking, it could also decrease the amount of other crimes that are associated with the drug culture. The taxes on such items like other prescribed and over- the-counter drugs would be reduced. Medical uses of marijuana for the relief of nausea in cancer and AIDS patients and the stimulation of appetite have been proven to have better affects than those of prescribed and over-the-counter drugs. The oil and fibers of the cannabis plant have many uses such as making rope, cloth, paper, and fuel. Aloe Vera is defined as the mucilaginous juice or gel obtained from the leaves of this plant, widely used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations for its soothing and healing properties (dictionary.com). Note that both Marijuana and Aloe Vera are used for medicinal use yet aloe vera is legal and marijuana isnt. Why is it? Many people oppose the legalization of marijuana as they consider it a drug, one that will open the doors to other harsher more serious drugs. Although this may be true only a person that abuses drugs will allow themselves to fall into a hole. Many people dont look at marijuana as a plant that has many healing powers but as a drug that causes damage. Legalization advocates deny that the amount of drug use would be affected. People believe that drug use would soar because of the availability. My best friend, Alana, and I have been smoking pot for several years now. Yet, she moved on to more drugs, she tried new things. She tried coke. I was very displeased with her choice but I stated my feelings to her about her using such a drug. I am not sure whether she is addicted to it but she knows that I dont like her doing it and knows that I am not going to lecture her on her using it anymore. For me, I am just fine with smoking marijuana, for her, on the other hand, she isnt satisfied. It is a common misconception that marijuana is a gateway drug and leads to other more harsher drugs. I know from personal experiences that it doesnt necessarily lead to more harsh drugs. Like I have mentioned previously, I have been smoking pot for a few years now and have had no desire whatsoever to try any other drug. As far as it being more readily available, yes it is; however, people would smoke more pot but it doesnt necessarily mean more people are going to smoke pot. It is apparent that the ban on marijuana in the United States is unnecessary due to the fact that the crime would be reduced, its results are proved to be better than those of prescribed drugs and taxes on other products would be reduced. The government and the rest of society havent looked at the benefits that marijuana has. Ignorant people only look at it as a dangerous drug. Medically, marijuana improves those who use it. Information media has evolved right along with technology and can now be accessed quickly and easily. Although the news can now be easily accessed and has evolved with the technology today, there are still flaws and room to grow. Information media has social responsibility because it provides news to everyone in the world. The importance of the accuracy of the news that is delivered to the public is serious. There is plenty of fake news that floats around on the internet that some people actually believe. There is a news station that makes fun of real news but actually is more entertaining and makes the news easier to watch. We recently launched in 2007 Onion News Network. And its doing extremely well. Its reached audiences that the newspaper and the online newspaper has never been able to reach through this whole viral thing (Randazzo). There are certain news outlets that the public turns to such as; CNN, Fox news, NBC news, and ABC news. Reporting false news or partial news will ruin a news outlets credibility. Reporting news that happens around the world that is not necessarily easy to obtain is information medias responsibility. By reporting the news, the public is informed of the things going on around. Therefore the news has taken on the responsibility of doing its public duty and reporting news that benefits everyone. People depend on the news for everything including what is going on with the government and the country. The only role the information and news media should play when it comes to politics is reporting information on what is going on. It does help that the media outlets sometimes show coverage of debates between political parties so that the public has an easier way to get information on the political parties they are choosing and maybe see what the other party has to offer. Information media should stay a neutral party when reporting information on politics. That way the public can decide for themselves. Information media is a lot easier to access on the go since technology has evolved. People can now view any story that was covered by a news outlet on their mobile devices anywhere they go. Because the news is more accessible, newspapers like The New York Times, can post online or on their mobile apps as soon as they receive the story. The newspaper companies used to have to wait until the story was finished then printed just to break the story to the public. For years, weve operated under the assumption that we just have to know whats going on by midnight when the press roles. And we have all day to work on that story. So we work and work and work on it. At midnight, you hit the button (Little). With the new technology, there is no more waiting and people can see what the news stations have reported on their mobile devices. People watch the news a lot more when it is more accessible and easier to access the exact story they want to know about instead of waiting. This makes news easi er for a new generation. A younger crowd is now more involved with what is going on in their community. With the new day and age, electronic media has become a part of everyday life. Person Vs Human: What Makes A Man? What makes up a man? This is the philosophical question mainly explored in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, entitled The Measure of a Man. In this episode, a formal hearing is held to debate whether or not Lieutenant Commander Data, an android who has been a long-time member of the Star Fleet, has the right to refuse undergoing a risky scientific experiment. The scientist who wishes to perform the procedure, named Bruce Maddox, claims that Data is not entitled to the right to refuse because Data, simply put, is a piece of technology. As a result, he claims that it would be absurd to entitle a thing to the same rights that a human being has. On the other hand, Captain Picard, a fellow crew member who sees Data as an equal, argues otherwise. He states that despite how Data technically isnt human, he is entitled to the same rights because he demonstrates the core qualities of human being, such as intelligence and self-awareness. A difficult decision must now be made: to all ow Data to refuse the procedure by acknowledging that he has the right to be regarded as a sentient being like a fellow human being, or to simply see Data as a piece of property without any rights and all of his human-like acts as being mere imitations and a complex system of if-then clauses. Though Data, being an android, is obviously not a human being, the episode ultimately raises the question of to what extent must an individual, or even a piece of technology, exhibit to be seen as an equal-a level that we, as human beings, recognize in each other? Captain Picards arguments focus more on how Data is a person rather than how he is not a biological human being, and that persons maintain certain rights. Commonly, most people today use the terms human and person interchangeably. However with deeper examination, it can been acknowledged that a person and a human being are not entirely same. A human being refers to people in a more a biological sense; being a human being merely implies that you are of the species homo sapiens. On the other hand, being a person signifies that you are a sentient being with a level of conscience. As a result of demonstrating these qualities, a person is to be regarded as one who is entitled to certain rights, a level of moral respect, and, ultimately, a right to life. And since being a person is different from being a biological human, it can be assumed that anyone, even an android such as Data, may be entitled to the rights that a person has; just because of the fact that one is not a homo sapien does not mean he is disqualified from the holding the moral respect a person deserves. Furthermore, it should be noted that not all human beings are persons, for an individual must have a level of rationality or consciousness to be regarded as a person. Maddox points out that a debate would not be taking place if it had been a computer or a toaster that had refused to undergo the procedure. But he failed to consider the fact that a toaster or a computer does not maintain a level of rationality or consciousness, hence not entitling it to the moral rights that a person is accorded with. Things that have failed to demonstrate these qualities, including certain human beings, are not viewed as persons, hence not entitled to these rights. For instance, a boy who is stuck in a permanently vegetative state and does not demonstrate any signs of brain activity may be regarded as a human being, but not a person. As a result, if it were decided that he would euthanized, there would be as much uproar as there would be if it had been boy had been severely injured, but still consciou s, because he would still be regarded as a person. Hence, it becomes evident that being human is not what determines whether or not someone like Data is a person, but the level of consciousness that one, whether he is a human or android or Klingon, exhibits. Captain Picard argues that it does not matter that Data is an android because the species of an individual does not determine his personhood. During his argument, Picard states three characteristics that determine whether or not an individual is to be regarded as a person: intelligence, self-awareness, and consciousness. The trial ends in Picards favor because Data demonstrates to a degree all of these traits, and the fact that Data is an android does not work against his favor. It is ruled that as a result of demonstrating these characteristics, Data is ultimately deserves the moral respect that every person does. Conclusively, it becomes clear that being human does not automatically entitle an individual with the rights of a person, but the level of rationality or consciousness.
