Family Health Assessment The health of a family is a vital part of how that family interacts with one another and how each individual of the family will function in society, later teaching their children about a healthy lifestyle or lack thereof. The family health assessment helps to identify risk factors and potential dysfunction (Edelman, 2014) I interviewed a single parent family home about their health and how they perceive it. This family is an all-male family, an athletic seventeen year old boy getting ready for his senior year, a twenty year old young man, and a hardworking, dedicated, overweight father. Growing up Robert, the father of this family, was the eldest of three siblings. Medical appointments are put off due to other obligations and doctor offices make health care less appealing by the long wait times and feeling of being rushed or pushed out of the office. The perception of health is more prominent in the family now than it was before. â€Å"My family sees me as trying to be a health freak. Health is foreign to them, they do not understand passing up and making sacrifices of certain foods and exercising on a regular basis. I come from a long line of unhealthy people; I want my boys to have a more knowledgeable understanding† (Garrett, 2014). As the head of the household, Robert feels that his role is to be the instructor and the enforcer, using his bad habits ranging from health, sedentary activities, putting off regular checkups, and other lifestyle choices as talking points and examples hoping that will be in the back of his boys’ minds so they don’t make the same mistakes as he did. Robert feels that his role as a provider is to teach and show his children how to take care and provide for themselves, to be responsible for their own self. One would probably say playing their game and put the chores on the back burner because they could always do it later. This would be classified as procrastination. Procrastination may cause many negative effects including unnecessary stress and loss of one’s happiness. There are two different types of procrastination: behavioral and decisional. Behavioral procrastination is when one uses procrastination as an excuse to do poorly; for example, one may put off studying for an exam until last minute and blame a bad exam score on the procrastination. Another instant where one may have behavior tendencies is when one has low self-esteem or self-worth and believes that if he or she never finishes a task, he or she will not be judged. Those with decisional procrastination problems typically put off making a decision or choice; they typically are afraid of errors and are possibly perfectionists. Decisional procrastinators generally seek out other alternatives until they are made to make a decision, if they make a decision at all. 20% of the population is guilty of procrastination and recent studies show that it is on the rise. Everyone tends to procrastination, possibly not as often as most but definitely occasionally. One of the effects of procrastination is unnecessary stress. Everyone knows that stress has a very negative effect on oneself. Stress is a type of pressure or worry, usually unneeded. Stress has many effects in itself; it may take a toll on one’s body, one’s mood, and one’s behavior. The tolls it can take on one’s body include headaches, sleep problems, and stomach pains. It can affect one’s body by possibly giving a person anxiety, sadness, or even depression. Stress can affect one behavior be making one go through social withdraws, angry outbursts, and drug and alcohol abuse. All of these additional symptoms of stress could lead to health problems, which are well worth avoiding. Upon all of the things that can come from stress, stress leads back to procrastination. So the more one procrastinates, the more stress one will get, so therefore the more they will procrastinate. Another effect of procrastination is the threat of one’s happiness. Happiness is the state of being content or completely satisfied. Happiness is important in one’s life because that is what gives one the motivation and will to wake up tomorrow and enjoy the little things of life that often go unnoticed, too. Without happiness, one will become depressed; depression has many, many additional negative symptoms. As you can see, by procrastinating, you can hurt more than just your grade. Procrastination can take effect on nearly every part of your life. It can lead to stress which in the end can take a toll on your health, which is scary. Procrastination may also take away one’s happiness, which could lead to depression. One should note, it is much easier to do work that can be done today, today, and not put anything off for later. The development of the American colonies had six different factors contributing to it. They were the Enlightenment, European population explosion, Glorious Revolution, Great Awakening, mercantilism, and Religious tolerance. The Enlightenment was a cultural movement that challenged the authority of the church in science and philosophy while elevating the power of human reason. One of the most influential Enlightenment writers was John Locke. He argued with the church that people were not born with sinful minds. He believed that their mind was shaped by society and education, which made people better. Baron Montesquieu, another writer, contributed to American colonies by creating our three political powers: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. They are separated into different branches, which provide checks and balances against each other so they have equal power. The European population explosion happened in the early 1700’s when the climate became warmer and the diseases began to decline. This caused a population boom and a very large amount of new immigrants to come to America. Between 1720 and 1770, wheat prices more than doubled, so this brought a wave of wealth and prosperity to America. This rapid rise of wheat trade and the arrival of new settlers changed the society of the American colonies. The Glorious Revolution was a bloodless change of the throne in England. The English people and Parliament were growing tired of James II because he was Catholic, but were willing to tolerate him because they were expecting his Protestant daughter, Mary and her husband, William of Orange, to succeed James to the throne. When they received the news of James’ son being born, it broke their hope. Parliament was not going to risk another Catholic dynasty, so they invited William and Mary to the throne. When William arrived in England, James ran away and then this caused an uprising in Boston. Andros, the governor of New England, and his councilors were seized and imprisoned. William and Mary let the Dominion of New England die silently, but they did not restore the old system fully. They let Connecticut and Rhode Island go back to their old system, but did not surrender all control over Massachusetts. They eventually issued a new charter in 1691. This combined Massachusetts Bay colony, Plymouth colony, and Maine into the royal colony of Massachusetts. Under this new charter, the people of Massachusetts were given the right to elect an assembly. Also, people who could vote did not have to be members of a Puritan congregation, but only had to own land. This charter also granted freedom of worship to Anglicans living in Massachusetts. The Great Awakening was a revival of religious freedom. The central idea of this was having an internal emotional experience that brings one to God. George Whitefield arrived in Philadelphia in 1739. He was an Anglican Minister who was influenced by Methodism and he attracted huge crowds everywhere he preached. This awakening also brought the New Lights and Old Lights. The New Lights experienced a surge membership while other churches memberships declined. Also in the south, Baptists welcomed enslaved Africans at their revivals and brought them to God. This caused a new African Christian culture to come about. This was one of the most important ideas that are still implanted in the American society today. Mercantilism is a set of ideas about the world economy and how it worked. Mercantilists thought that to become wealthy and powerful, a country had to accumulate gold and silver. They did this by selling more goods than brought to them, causing more gold and silver to come in than go out of the country. Mercantilism provided to colonies by giving them a reliable market for some of their raw materials. This one factor taught the American colonies today to become more self sufficient. Religious tolerance was an important but often misunderstood contribution to the American colonies. Groups such as Pilgrims and Puritans left Europe to escape religious persecution and to have religious freedom. The Pilgrims landed off course in Cape Cod so they signed the Mayflower Compact to keep things in order. This compact established the precedent for local government based on written agreements. Also, the Great Migration began in 1630 when 60,000 Puritans headed for America, and this helped establish the Massachusetts Bay Colony. All of these factors helped contribute in some way to the development of the American colonies. Some helped in the past and still are helping today, but some just set the standards for our society today.

With the government having control over the selling of weed it would also control who purchases marijuana, similar to the purchasing of tobacco. Parents could worry less about their teenagers purchasing marijuana under age as well as preventing teenagers from getting involved with dealers. Unlike cigarettes, alcohol, cocaine, and heroin, marijuana is not addictive (War on Drugs 25). Like cigarettes one is unable to purchase them until one is eighteen years of age; however, many teenagers still find ways of getting them on their own. This is the same for marijuana. If a teenager wants to purchase marijuana then they will find ways to get. People would no longer be arrested for carrying marijuana on them; therefore, decreasing the amount of drug trafficking in Canada. By eliminating the crime caused by marijuana selling and smoking, it could also decrease the amount of other crimes that are associated with the drug culture. This year alone the government has increased the price of tobacco as well as the amount of hydroelectricity we pay for our houses. If we look at how much money was consumed last year form the selling of illegal marijuana we can see that it would raise our countrys profits significantly. Each year almost 7 billion dollars is made through the exporting of marijuana. Since the government would be controlling the buying and selling of it, it could charge a hefty amount in taxes. For the pot-smoker that wouldnt necessarily be for the best, but for the other tax payers the tax on other products would reduce significantly. The taxes on such items like other prescribed and over- the-counter drugs would be reduced. Medical uses of marijuana for the relief of nausea in cancer and AIDS patients and the stimulation of appetite have been proven to have better affects than those of prescribed and over-the-counter drugs. The oil and fibers of the cannabis plant have many uses such as making rope, cloth, paper, and fuel. Aloe Vera is defined as the mucilaginous juice or gel obtained from the leaves of this plant, widely used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations for its soothing and healing properties (dictionary.com). Note that both Marijuana and Aloe Vera are used for medicinal use yet aloe vera is legal and marijuana isnt. Why is it? Many people oppose the legalization of marijuana as they consider it a drug, one that will open the doors to other harsher more serious drugs. Although this may be true only a person that abuses drugs will allow themselves to fall into a hole. Many people dont look at marijuana as a plant that has many healing powers but as a drug that causes damage. Legalization advocates deny that the amount of drug use would be affected. People believe that drug use would soar because of the availability. My best friend, Alana, and I have been smoking pot for several years now. Yet, she moved on to more drugs, she tried new things. She tried coke. I was very displeased with her choice but I stated my feelings to her about her using such a drug. I am not sure whether she is addicted to it but she knows that I dont like her doing it and knows that I am not going to lecture her on her using it anymore. For me, I am just fine with smoking marijuana, for her, on the other hand, she isnt satisfied. It is a common misconception that marijuana is a gateway drug and leads to other more harsher drugs. I know from personal experiences that it doesnt necessarily lead to more harsh drugs. Like I have mentioned previously, I have been smoking pot for a few years now and have had no desire whatsoever to try any other drug. As far as it being more readily available, yes it is; however, people would smoke more pot but it doesnt necessarily mean more people are going to smoke pot. It is apparent that the ban on marijuana in the United States is unnecessary due to the fact that the crime would be reduced, its results are proved to be better than those of prescribed drugs and taxes on other products would be reduced. The government and the rest of society havent looked at the benefits that marijuana has. Ignorant people only look at it as a dangerous drug. Medically, marijuana improves those who use it. Every morning the paperboy or girl tossed the daily news on their usual paper route while the neighborhood patiently waited to see what was happening in the world around them. Now the news can be received right after it happens via television, internet, or the closest smartphone. Information media has evolved right along with technology and can now be accessed quickly and easily. Although the news can now be easily accessed and has evolved with the technology today, there are still flaws and room to grow. Information media has social responsibility because it provides news to everyone in the world. The importance of the accuracy of the news that is delivered to the public is serious. There is plenty of fake news that floats around on the internet that some people actually believe. There is a news station that makes fun of real news but actually is more entertaining and makes the news easier to watch. We recently launched in 2007 Onion News Network. And its doing extremely well. Its reached audiences that the newspaper and the online newspaper has never been able to reach through this whole viral thing (Randazzo). There are certain news outlets that the public turns to such as; CNN, Fox news, NBC news, and ABC news. Reporting false news or partial news will ruin a news outlets credibility. Reporting news that happens around the world that is not necessarily easy to obtain is information medias responsibility. By reporting the news, the public is informed of the things going on around. Therefore the news has taken on the responsibility of doing its public duty and reporting news that benefits everyone. People depend on the news for everything including what is going on with the government and the country. The only role the information and news media should play when it comes to politics is reporting information on what is going on. It does help that the media outlets sometimes show coverage of debates between political parties so that the public has an easier way to get information on the political parties they are choosing and maybe see what the other party has to offer. Information media should stay a neutral party when reporting information on politics. That way the public can decide for themselves. Information media is a lot easier to access on the go since technology has evolved. People can now view any story that was covered by a news outlet on their mobile devices anywhere they go. Because the news is more accessible, newspapers like The New York Times, can post online or on their mobile apps as soon as they receive the story. The newspaper companies used to have to wait until the story was finished then printed just to break the story to the public. For years, weve operated under the assumption that we just have to know whats going on by midnight when the press roles. And we have all day to work on that story. So we work and work and work on it. At midnight, you hit the button (Little). With the new technology, there is no more waiting and people can see what the news stations have reported on their mobile devices. People watch the news a lot more when it is more accessible and easier to access the exact story they want to know about instead of waiting. This makes news easi er for a new generation. A younger crowd is now more involved with what is going on in their community. With the new day and age, electronic media has become a part of everyday life. Person Vs Human: What Makes A Man? What makes up a man? This is the philosophical question mainly explored in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, entitled The Measure of a Man. In this episode, a formal hearing is held to debate whether or not Lieutenant Commander Data, an android who has been a long-time member of the Star Fleet, has the right to refuse undergoing a risky scientific experiment. The scientist who wishes to perform the procedure, named Bruce Maddox, claims that Data is not entitled to the right to refuse because Data, simply put, is a piece of technology. As a result, he claims that it would be absurd to entitle a thing to the same rights that a human being has. On the other hand, Captain Picard, a fellow crew member who sees Data as an equal, argues otherwise. He states that despite how Data technically isnt human, he is entitled to the same rights because he demonstrates the core qualities of human being, such as intelligence and self-awareness. A difficult decision must now be made: to all ow Data to refuse the procedure by acknowledging that he has the right to be regarded as a sentient being like a fellow human being, or to simply see Data as a piece of property without any rights and all of his human-like acts as being mere imitations and a complex system of if-then clauses. Though Data, being an android, is obviously not a human being, the episode ultimately raises the question of to what extent must an individual, or even a piece of technology, exhibit to be seen as an equal-a level that we, as human beings, recognize in each other? Captain Picards arguments focus more on how Data is a person rather than how he is not a biological human being, and that persons maintain certain rights. Commonly, most people today use the terms human and person interchangeably. However with deeper examination, it can been acknowledged that a person and a human being are not entirely same. A human being refers to people in a more a biological sense; being a human being merely implies that you are of the species homo sapiens. On the other hand, being a person signifies that you are a sentient being with a level of conscience. As a result of demonstrating these qualities, a person is to be regarded as one who is entitled to certain rights, a level of moral respect, and, ultimately, a right to life. And since being a person is different from being a biological human, it can be assumed that anyone, even an android such as Data, may be entitled to the rights that a person has; just because of the fact that one is not a homo sapien does not mean he is disqualified from the holding the moral respect a person deserves. Furthermore, it should be noted that not all human beings are persons, for an individual must have a level of rationality or consciousness to be regarded as a person. Maddox points out that a debate would not be taking place if it had been a computer or a toaster that had refused to undergo the procedure. But he failed to consider the fact that a toaster or a computer does not maintain a level of rationality or consciousness, hence not entitling it to the moral rights that a person is accorded with. Things that have failed to demonstrate these qualities, including certain human beings, are not viewed as persons, hence not entitled to these rights. For instance, a boy who is stuck in a permanently vegetative state and does not demonstrate any signs of brain activity may be regarded as a human being, but not a person. As a result, if it were decided that he would euthanized, there would be as much uproar as there would be if it had been boy had been severely injured, but still consciou s, because he would still be regarded as a person. Hence, it becomes evident that being human is not what determines whether or not someone like Data is a person, but the level of consciousness that one, whether he is a human or android or Klingon, exhibits. Captain Picard argues that it does not matter that Data is an android because the species of an individual does not determine his personhood. During his argument, Picard states three characteristics that determine whether or not an individual is to be regarded as a person: intelligence, self-awareness, and consciousness. The trial ends in Picards favor because Data demonstrates to a degree all of these traits, and the fact that Data is an android does not work against his favor. It is ruled that as a result of demonstrating these characteristics, Data is ultimately deserves the moral respect that every person does. Conclusively, it becomes clear that being human does not automatically entitle an individual with the rights of a person, but the level of rationality or consciousness.
